What's the best neocloud stock play right now, given the recent sell-off in the subsector?
Seeking Alpha analysts The Curious Analyst and Rational Techne gave us their thoughts.
The Curious Analyst: My preferred pick would be Applied Digital (APLD). This is because APLD's investment case is strongly supported by long-term contracted revenue.
APLD has already signed leases for about 1.4 GW of critical IT capacity across five AI factory campuses. This is worth $36B in base-term contracted revenue. What's interesting is that 70% of this revenue is backed by U.S.-based hyperscalers. So that gives the company better cash flow visibility than if it were a smaller AI infrastructure developer.
I also like Nebius (NBIS), which I would consider the more aggressive growth play of the two. There are a few things to like about NBIS.
First, the company's AI cloud revenue has increased by 574% year-over-year to about $399M during the last quarter. Second, it is sitting on $9.3B in cash, which gives it the financial muscle to compete for larger hyperscaler workloads. Third, there is Nvidia's (NVDA) recently disclosed 9.3% stake, which I think adds another layer of strategic validation and credibility, especially given that Nvidia seems to have a close view of where AI infrastructure demand is developing.
Rational Techne: Some sell-offs offer buying opportunities as markets overshoot to the downside. Others are simply the beginning of something larger as markets start the process of correcting previous excesses.
When it comes to what we've seen of late in the neocloud space, I think we're definitely seeing the latter: a market beginning to correct previous excesses. As I've written about before on SA, I think most of these businesses are fundamentally flawed, present significant downside risks to investors, and are likely to see significant additional downside going forward, in addition to what we've witnessed of late.
Whether now turns out to be the exact point when that process begins to happen, we shall see. But as to the question "What's the best neocloud stock play after the sell-off?" my answer would be "none of them."
