HD Hyundai Samho secured a contract to supply four container-handling cranes to Washington United Terminals, marking another step in the South Korean shipbuilder's efforts to expand its presence in the U.S. maritime infrastructure market.
The agreement calls for HD Hyundai Samho to design, manufacture, transport, install and commission two quay cranes and two yard cranes for the Port of Tacoma in Washington state. Delivery of the equipment is scheduled by 2028.
For investors, the contract highlights how geopolitical priorities and U.S. efforts to strengthen domestic maritime infrastructure are creating opportunities for overseas suppliers with established U.S. relationships. While the financial terms were not disclosed, the deal underscores HD Hyundai's strategy to broaden its business beyond shipbuilding into port equipment as Washington and Seoul deepen industrial cooperation.
The cranes will be installed as part of a modernization project by WUT, the U.S. subsidiary of South Korea's largest shipping company, HMM. The project will replace two aging quay cranes while adding two new yard cranes, increasing the terminal's capacity to handle larger container ships and improving cargo operations.
HD Hyundai Samho said it will execute the project on a turnkey basis, overseeing every phase from engineering and manufacturing to installation and commissioning.
The company noted that four of the Port of Tacoma terminal's existing eight quay cranes were supplied by HD Hyundai Samho in 1999. Since 1985, it has delivered 20 port cranes to major U.S. ports.
The announcement also reflects broader cooperation between the United States and South Korea in maritime industries under the Make American Shipbuilding Great Again initiative, which aims to expand collaboration on shipbuilding and related infrastructure.
An HD Hyundai Samho representative said the Tacoma order reflects the company's experience in domestic and international crane projects and its long-standing relationships with U.S. customers. The company said it plans to continue supporting the bilateral shipbuilding initiative through the development of more efficient and environmentally focused port equipment.
The agreement follows discussions between HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Kisun and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer last year on expanding cooperation in shipbuilding and maritime infrastructure, during which the company highlighted its port crane manufacturing capabilities.
