Unauthorized copies of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey have appeared on social media just over a week after the film's theatrical debut, prompting Universal Pictures (CMCSA) to step up enforcement efforts against online piracy.
Several pirated versions of The Odyssey were posted on X over the weekend, including one that remained online for roughly two hours before being removed after attracting tens of thousands of views. Another higher-quality copy reportedly generated millions of views before it was taken down and the associated account was suspended.
Universal Pictures said it moved quickly after learning of the unauthorized uploads.
"We became aware of the unauthorized posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols," the studio said in a statement. "We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights."
The Odyssey this weekend generated a hefty $22,070 per-theater average and lifted its domestic box-office total to $286.4 million through Sunday. Worldwide, the film crossed the $600 million mark, reaching an estimated $639.6 million, including $353.2 million from international markets.
For investors, the incident underscores the ongoing challenge piracy poses to major film releases, particularly high-profile blockbusters that rely on strong theatrical performance during their opening weeks. Studios continue to devote significant resources to removing unauthorized copies in an effort to protect box office revenue.
