SoftBank (SFTBY) is nearing a deal to acquire Japanese payments services provider SP.LINKS after emerging as the preferred bidder in an auction valuing the company at about ¥100B ($625M), Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Under the proposed transaction, Blackstone (BX) will sell its 80% stake in SP.LINKS, while Sony Financial Group's (SFGYY) banking unit will divest its remaining 20% holding, making SP.LINKS a wholly owned subsidiary of SoftBank (SFTBY), the report added.
The sale process attracted multiple bidders, with SoftBank's (SFTBY) telecom unit advancing to the final round alongside a private equity fund.
In January 2024, Blackstone (BX) had bought an 80% stake in the company—then known as Sony Payment Services—from Sony Group. A sale at about ¥100B would roughly double the company's value in just over two years.
The financial terms of the deal have not been finalized and remain subject to change.
SP.LINKS provides payment settlement services for credit card and electronic payments and has benefited from Japan's growing adoption of cashless payments.
