Resorts World New York City announced and began the next phase of its expansion at Aqueduct in Queens. The groundbreaking has begun for phase two of the multibillion-dollar plan, which includes a 400-room hotel tower and a concert arena, extending the property beyond gaming into a larger entertainment resort.The company’s broader plan for the $5.5B integrated resort is for it to eventually include thousands of slots and tables, more hotel rooms, and major event space. Notably, the high-profile property currently operates as the only full-scale casino in New York City, which raises the stakes for nearby gaming markets, especially Atlantic City, because it could lose even more regional traffic as New Yorkers and visitors stay in the city.The casino is operated by the Genting Group, a global company founded in 1965, with destination resort operations in the Catskills, Hudson Valley, Las Vegas, Bimini, Malaysia, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.Resorts World's Queens casino is expected to have more competition in the future. In December, the New York State Gaming Commission approved three locations, including a Bally's (BALY) location on land next to the former Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point in the Bronx and a casino and entertainment center near Citi Field, backed by Mets owner Steve Cohen. Both are ground-up construction projects, with anticipated opening timelines pushed out to 2030, which gives Resorts World New York City a multi-year window as the only full casino game in town.Wynn Resorts (WYNN) and MGM Resorts (MGM) both backed out of the New York City casino license bidding process, while Caesars Entertainment's (CZR) Times Square casino project in New York City was voted down in September of last year and did not advance to the state licensing stage.
