Circle Internet Group (CRCL) stock climbed 2.8% in Monday premarket trading after the stablecoin company announced the acquisition of assets from IBM's (IBM) blockchain patent portfolio. IBM stock gained 1.6%.
The acquired portfolio consists of more than 680 patent families and almost 1,000 issued patents worldwide, with blockchain technology for such various applications as banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secured cloud operations.
The transaction supports Circle's (CRCL) foundation for building the internet financial system, including USDC (USDC-USD), Circle Payments Network, Arc, and its growing line of onchain products and financial tools. The two companies also plan to explore additional commercial opportunities.
Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.
"IBM has been a pioneer in technological innovation, and this acquisition expands Circle’s ability to advance the infrastructure that powers global, internet-native finance," said Sarah Wilson, general counsel and corporate secretary at Circle (CRCL).
