L3Harris Technologies (LHX) said it has signed a seven-year framework agreement that will nearly triple production of motors for Patriot air defense missiles, expanding manufacturing capacity for one of the U.S. military's most important missile defense programs.
The agreement, signed with the U.S. Department of Defense and Lockheed Martin (LMT), leverages the Pentagon's multi-year procurement authorities to support long-term production of propulsion systems for the Patriot missile program. The contract is expected to be finalized later this year, although financial terms weren't disclosed.
For investors, the agreement highlights sustained demand for missile defense systems as the U.S. and its allies work to expand munitions production amid rising global security tensions. The long-term framework also provides L3Harris with greater visibility into future demand while supporting its ongoing investments in manufacturing capacity, though the financial value of the contract has not been disclosed.
The work covers propulsion components for the Patriot system's PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement, or PAC-3 MSE, interceptor, including its advanced two-pulse solid rocket motor, attitude control motors and the lethality enhancer, an explosive device designed to increase the interceptor's effectiveness against threats such as cruise missiles.
"This critical, long-term agreement will allow us to continue to move at unprecedented speed and produce PAC-3 propulsion at rates never before seen," Ken Bedingfield, president of missile solutions at L3Harris (LHX), said in a statement.
The company said it is preparing its manufacturing facilities and supplier network to support the production increase while adding capacity to meet future demand from the U.S. military and allied nations.
L3Harris manufactures the PAC-3 MSE propulsion systems at its facility in Camden, Arkansas, where it has added dedicated processing bays and automated digital X-ray inspection equipment to improve throughput and reduce inspection and production cycle times.
The company also said it is investing billions of dollars to expand its solid rocket motor manufacturing footprint, including constructing about 60 facilities and adding or upgrading nearly 1 million square feet of manufacturing and office space across operations in Alabama, Arkansas and Virginia.
