Amazon Leo (AMZN), the company’s low earth orbit satellite system designed to provide internet service, seeks to deploy more than 5,000 satellites starting in 2028 to deliver voice, data, messaging, and emergency services to smartphones and mobile devices.
According to a filing with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, Amazon Leo Direct-to-Device (D2D) system will connect mobile devices directly from space through Globalstar’s (GSAT) spectrum.
Amazon (AMZN) is in the process of acquiring Globalstar’s existing satellite operations, infrastructure (including spectrum licenses), and assets. The D2D system will be operating alongside Leo’s first- and second-generation satellite broadband system and with Globalstar’s HIBLEO and C-3 satellite constellations.
As part of this effort to provide internet and phone service to remote areas, Amazon Leo (AMZN) has partnered with telecom operators Vodafone (VOD), DirecTV (TPG), Herotel, and Australia’s National Broadband Network.
Amazon (AMZN) is modestly higher in Monday’s early trading and set to break a four-day losing streak.
