Rheinmetall (RNMBF)(RNMBY) received a follow-on order from the German armed forces for 56 additional HX81 Elefant 2 heavy-duty transporters, expanding an existing procurement program as Germany continues to strengthen its military logistics capabilities.
The contract, valued at approximately €60.5 million ($68.8 million), calls for deliveries by Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles during 2026 and 2027.
The order expands a seven-year framework agreement that originally covered up to 137 vehicles. The Bundeswehr initially ordered 32 Elefant 2 transporters under the contract, with additional options bringing the framework's total potential value to €122 million before the latest expansion.
Rheinmetall said the agreement has now been extended to include another 56 vehicles in response to increased demand.
The HX81 Elefant 2 is designed to transport heavy military equipment, including armored combat vehicles. Rheinmetall said the vehicle complements the Bundeswehr's armored Mammut heavy transporter, which was also supplied by RMMV.
Germany has identified heavy transport capacity as an important capability as the country serves as a logistical hub for NATO's collective defense efforts.
The four-wheel-drive transporter is powered by a 680-horsepower, eight-cylinder diesel engine. Rheinmetall said it can reach a top speed of 89 kilometers per hour, climb grades of up to 60% and handle a technically permissible gross combination weight of 135 metric tons.
The vehicle also features the same driver's cab used across the Bundeswehr's UTF truck family and is equipped with a twin-winch system manufactured by Rotzler, with each winch capable of pulling up to 20 metric tons.
