Emerson (EMR) on Monday unveiled five new artificial intelligence agents for its Ovation automation platform, expanding its software portfolio for power generation and water treatment customers with tools designed to monitor plant operations, analyze equipment performance and recommend corrective actions.
The new AI agents will be introduced this fall as part of the Ovation Automation Platform 4.0 and include a sequence assistant, alarm insight, predictive maintenance, root cause and loop performance monitor.
The company said the software is designed to operate in the background while integrating directly into existing operator workflows, rather than requiring users to switch between separate analytics applications.
Emerson (EMR) said the AI agents continuously monitor plant conditions, identify anomalies and provide recommendations, while operators retain final authority over any actions.
According to the company, the software is intended to reduce the time required for diagnostics and analysis from hours or days to minutes. Emerson said the technology is designed to help utilities address operational complexity, workforce turnover and large volumes of plant data.
"Ovation AI Agents deliver a major step change in our AI portfolio, representing a significant advancement in how we help our customers build more intelligent, efficient and resilient operations," Bob Yeager, president of Emerson's power and water solutions business, said in a statement.
Yeager said the software can monitor asset health, analyze operational data, forecast equipment failures and prioritize maintenance activities to help operators move from reactive to proactive maintenance.
The first release includes tools aimed at different aspects of plant operations.
The sequence assistant agent analyzes sequence-based control logic and identifies conditions that prevent equipment startup. Emerson said it can recommend corrective actions when equipment startup sequences stall.
The alarm insight agent is designed to prioritize alerts during periods when operators receive large numbers of alarms simultaneously.
The predictive maintenance agent monitors equipment for signs of deterioration and recommends maintenance before failures occur.
The root cause agent correlates alarms, equipment status and process conditions to identify underlying causes of operational issues.
The loop performance monitor agent evaluates control loop performance and identifies issues such as oscillation, deadband and poor tuning while generating recommendations for engineering review.
Emerson (EMR) said the five agents are the first phase of a broader AI strategy that includes plans for an additional 28 agents covering operations, maintenance, optimization, instrumentation, control and management functions.
The company also plans to demonstrate an Ovation AI Agent Builder at its Ovation Users Group Conference. The software is intended to allow customers to create and customize AI agents for their own operational requirements.
