Rio Tinto (RIO) and the Western Australia government said Monday they agreed to sell their 50-50 joint venture stakes in the Dampier Seawater Desalination Plant to Yindjibarndi WaterCo, with a binding agreement expected by year-end 2026.
The plant has a construction budget of A$1.1B (~US$770.2M) and is expected to supply eight gigaliters of desalinated water annually to the West Pilbara Water Supply Scheme.
Deal terms were not provided, with the sale price subject to construction costs and related factors, but Rio (RIO) said it will keep managing construction for the plant, with operational control proposed to transfer to Yindjibarndi WaterCo following construction completion, subject to a binding divestment agreement.
The Dampier plant is a multi-stage build, with phase 1 due to finish by year-end 2026, with first water expected in early 2027, and designed to produce 4 GL/year before eventually doubling to 8 GL/year.
"The proposed divestment reflects Rio Tinto's commitment to unlock capital as part of its strategy to deliver value for shareholders," the company said, referring to its previously announced target of generating $5B-$10B through divestments.
