Safran Helicopter Engines (SAFRF)(SAFRY) and French aircraft manufacturer Aura Aero signed an agreement to develop and integrate hybrid-electric propulsion systems for the prototype of Aura's ERA regional aircraft, marking the next phase of a partnership aimed at bringing the aircraft to flight testing and eventual certification.
The agreement expands on a memorandum of understanding signed in 2023 and covers the development and integration of Safran's TG600 turbogenerators into the 19-seat hybrid-electric aircraft.
The companies said the deal is intended to support the ERA program through prototype development, certification and eventual series production.
The ERA will use a hybrid-electric propulsion architecture consisting of eight electric propulsion units powered by two TG600 turbogenerators. Each turbogenerator will generate up to 600 kilowatts of electricity.
Safran said the TG600 combines its Arrano turbine engine with GENeUS electric generators supplied by Safran Electrical & Power. The same division will also provide ENGINeUS electric motors that drive the aircraft's propulsion units.
The companies said the system is designed to balance reliability, operational performance and fuel consumption while meeting commercial aviation requirements.
"We are particularly pleased to reach this important milestone in our partnership with Aura Aero," Cédric Goubet, chief executive of Safran Helicopter Engines, said in a statement. "Our teams will now be working alongside those at Aura Aero towards the first flight of a prototype."
Jérémy Caussade, chief executive and co-founder of Aura Aero, said the partnership is intended to support the development of a hybrid-electric propulsion system for regional aviation and advance lower-emission aircraft technologies.
Aura Aero launched the ERA program to develop a hybrid-electric regional aircraft intended to replace older aircraft operating on short-haul routes.
The company said it has received 700 pre-orders for the aircraft, although those commitments have not yet translated into firm deliveries.
Separately, Safran Electrical & Power said it has expanded its collaboration with Aura Aero to accelerate the development and certification of electric propulsion technologies. The work includes integrating EngineUS electric motors into Aura Aero's Integral E electric training aircraft and supporting future propulsion programs.
