Poland's Nitro-Chem, one of the world's largest producers of trinitrotoluene (TNT), has signed a letter of intent with BAE Systems (BAESF)(BAESY) to build a new explosives production facility in the United Kingdom, expanding NATO's munitions manufacturing capacity, Reuters reported Monday.
The planned plant will produce an additional 2,000 metric tons of TNT annually, according to Poland's Defense Ministry. Nitro-Chem currently manufactures about 10,000 metric tons per year, making it Europe's largest TNT producer and a key supplier to the U.S. military and other NATO allies.
The agreement highlights Europe's continued push to strengthen its defense industrial base and reduce supply chain risks as governments accelerate military spending. The project could benefit BAE Systems by reinforcing its position in NATO's ammunition supply chain, while underscoring sustained demand for munitions despite shifting defense priorities toward drones and advanced technologies.
Polish Deputy Defense Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said establishing production in Britain would improve resilience by diversifying manufacturing outside Poland in the event of a major regional security crisis involving Russia.
