Operator Eni (E) and TotalEnergies (TTE), 50/50 partners in Cyprus offshore Block 6, said Tuesday they have taken a final investment decision to develop the deepwater Cronos gas field, with first gas expected in 2028.
Located 185 km southwest of the Cyprus coast, Cronos will be developed through four subsea wells, and its gas will be transported by subsea pipeline from Cypriot waters to Egypt, where it will be liquefied at the Damietta LNG terminal before being exported to Europe.
The development of Cronos will partly rely on existing facilities in Egypt, generating significant synergies for a fast-track development, the companies said.
The Cronos field, which is Cyprus' first gas development, has more than 3 Tcf of gas initially in place, with production expected to reach a plateau of ~500 Mcf/day.
Europe has been left searching for alternate supplies in recent years after weaning itself off Russian gas following the invasion of Ukraine, and the conflict in the Middle East also has exposed the continent’s dependence on imported energy.
