Sherwin-Williams (SHW) raised its full-year earnings outlook after posting stronger-than-expected quarterly results, sending shares up 5.6% in premarket trading Tuesday. Before the earnings release, the stock was down 2.6% year-to-date.
The paint and coatings maker reported second-quarter revenue of $6.79 billion, up 7.5% from a year earlier and above Wall Street's consensus estimate of $6.6 billion.
Adjusted earnings rose to $3.70 a share, topping analysts' expectations of $3.52.
Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer Heidi Petz said, "Sherwin-Williams delivered strong second quarter results and continued to outperform the market despite ongoing global uncertainty and no meaningful improvement in demand."
For investors, the biggest takeaway was not just the quarterly beat but management's decision to lift its full-year profit forecast despite cautioning that customer demand remains soft. The company said market share gains, pricing actions and recent acquisitions are helping offset a sluggish macroeconomic backdrop, suggesting it continues to outperform many peers in the coatings industry.
Known for brands including Sherwin-Williams, Valspar, HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams, Krylon, Minwax, Thompson's WaterSeal, Cabot and Dutch Boy, the company benefited from growth across all three of its operating segments during the quarter.
Net income rose to $843.6 million, or $3.43 a share, from $754.7 million, or $3.00 a share.
Consolidated sales increased 7.5%, driven by higher revenue across the Paint Stores Group, Consumer Brands Group and Performance Coatings Group. The October 2025 acquisition of Brazilian paint maker Suvinil also contributed to growth.
Paint Stores Group sales rose 5.1% as selling price increases and higher sales volumes boosted professional end markets, including commercial construction, residential repaint and protective and marine coatings. Same-store sales increased 4.2%.
Consumer Brands Group revenue surged 21.5%, benefiting from the Suvinil acquisition, stronger North American sales and favorable currency movements. Performance Coatings Group sales increased 6.3%, led by gains in General Industrial, Automotive Refinish, Packaging, Industrial Wood and Coil coatings.
The company also reported earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $1.43 billion, up 13.8% from a year earlier. Ebitda margin improved to 21.1%, while adjusted ebitda margin reached 21.5%.
Sherwin-Williams (SHW) raised its full-year 2026 guidance, now expecting:
Adjusted diluted earnings of $11.80 to $12.20 per share, up from its prior outlook and above the Wall Street consensus estimate of $11.75.GAAP diluted earnings of $10.92 to $11.32 per share, including $0.81 per share of Valspar acquisition-related amortization expense and $0.07 per share of severance and restructuring costs.Net sales to increase by a mid to high-single digit % for the full year.
Management also expects third-quarter net sales to rise by a mid to high-single digit percentage compared with the prior year, even as it continues to see soft customer demand.
Petz said the company remains focused on pricing, productivity improvements and market share gains while responding to inflation in raw materials, energy, logistics and packaging. Sherwin-Williams (SHW) also announced an 8% price increase in its Paint Stores Group effective Sept. 1.
