SoftBank (SFTBY) was in focus on Tuesday as BTIG said the Japanese tech conglomerate's upcoming fiscal first-quarter results could encompass all the artificial intelligence concerns that have cropped up lately.
“SoftBank Group (SBG) was briefly the most valuable company on the [Tokyo Stock Exchange] last quarter, supported by ARM momentum, OpenAI enthusiasm, AI infrastructure announcements, and a weaker yen,” BTIG analyst Jesse Sobelson wrote in a note to clients. “Since then, sentiment has become more mixed: ARM has retraced sharply from June highs, debate around frontier-model value has intensified, and OpenAI-related financing remains unresolved. Heading into 1Q26 earnings on Aug. 6, we expect investors to focus on SBG’s financing capacity, OpenAI liquidity/IPO timing, and incremental commitments to AI infrastructure, robotics, data centers, and energy.”
Sobelson, who has a Buy rating and a ¥7,700 price target on SoftBank, said there could be added concerns about SoftBank's stake in OpenAI (OPENAI), given its possible initial public offering and recent AI sentiment.
“We expect management to address OpenAI funding, though likely with limited detail on IPO timing,” Sobelson added. “The key investor question is whether SBG can clarify cash needs, collateral capacity, and the status of any OpenAI-backed financing. Recent AI trading has also been volatile following Moonshot AI’s (Private) open-weight Kimi K3 release, which renewed 'DeepSeek-like' concerns around frontier-model value. While questions remain around potential distillation from Anthropic’s (Private) Claude, AISI data suggests open-source models still typically lag frontier systems by 4–7 months.”
Additionally, Sobelson said SoftBank's planned sale of its roughly 10% stake in Boston Dynamics to Hyundai is more of a “portfolio rotation” and not a retreat from robotics, as its pending $5.4B acquisition of ABB Robotics gives it scale.
“Strategically, we believe this fits Masa's 'Physical AI' framing linking SBG’s AI/compute ambitions with robotics,” Sobelson added.
