Airbus (EADSF)(EADSY) completed a nonstop test flight lasting more than 24 hours on Tuesday, advancing development of the ultra-long-range A350 aircraft that will power Qantas Airways' (QABSY)(QUBSF) planned nonstop flights between Australia and Europe.
The specially modified A350-1000ULR flew from Melbourne to Airbus' headquarters in Toulouse, France, remaining airborne for 24 hours and 24 minutes while covering 23,075 kilometers (14,338 miles). The flight is part of a two-month certification campaign that began in June.
For investors, the milestone keeps Airbus and Qantas on track for Project Sunrise, an ambitious initiative that could redefine long-haul travel. The program gives Airbus a showcase for its long-range widebody technology while allowing Qantas to differentiate itself with nonstop flights that eliminate traditional refueling stops between Australia and major global cities.
Airbus said the aircraft features an additional fuel tank to support flights lasting up to 20 hours. Qantas plans to use the model for nonstop routes linking Sydney with London and New York.
The high-profile test flight also drew widespread public attention. Flight-tracking service Flightradar24 said more than 3.6 million people followed the aircraft's progress, making it the second-most-tracked flight in the platform's history.
Qantas has ordered 12 customized A350-1000ULR aircraft. The first is scheduled for delivery in April 2027, with daily nonstop Sydney-London service expected to begin in October of that year.
The aircraft will seat 238 passengers and carry approximately 20,000 liters of additional fuel, enabling flights of roughly 19 to 21 hours depending on weather and routing. The new service will replace journeys that once required multiple stopovers with a single nonstop flight.
