Earnings Call Insights: Principal Financial Group (PFG) Q2 2026
"We delivered another strong quarter, demonstrating the earnings power of our diversified business model" (President, CEO & Chair of the Board Deanna Strable). "Adjusted non-GAAP earnings per share increased 17% year-over-year" and was supported by "200 basis points of margin expansion" and "favorable underwriting results and improved mortality within our Benefits and Protection business" alongside "strong RIS fundamentals" (President, CEO & Chair of the Board Strable).
"We returned nearly $430 million of capital to shareholders" and said this included "$250 million in share repurchases" and "nearly $180 million in common stock dividends" (President, CEO & Chair of the Board Strable). She added, "Earlier this month, we announced an agreement to acquire Beam Benefits" and called it "a digital-first employee benefits company focused on the SMB market" (President, CEO & Chair of the Board Strable).
"Non-GAAP operating earnings were $547 million" and "earnings per share of $2.50" (Executive VP & CFO Joel Pitz). "We remain on track to deliver on our full year capital deployment target of $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion" (Executive VP & CFO Pitz).
"We don't expect any changes to our outlook guidance it relates to earnings, free capital flow or ROE" following the Beam Benefits announcement (Executive VP & CFO Pitz). "We continue to expect full year 2026 performance fees to be in line with 2025" (Executive VP & CFO Pitz).
"I now expect loss ratios to emerge below the low end of the guidance range for the full year" for Specialty Benefits, referencing the previously communicated "60% to 64%" range (President of Benefits & Protection Amy Friedrich).
"Total company margin of 32% expanded 200 basis points" and "total company managed AUM ended the quarter at $808 billion" (Executive VP & CFO Pitz). He also said the company ended the quarter with "over $1.6 billion of excess and available capital" and highlighted "approximately 400%" risk-based capital at quarter end (Executive VP & CFO Pitz).
"Benefits and Protection generated strong pre-tax operating earnings of $191 million" and "the Specialty Benefits loss ratio of 57.4% improved 280 basis points" (Executive VP & CFO Pitz). He said the "Specialty Benefits underwriting results" and "improved Life mortality" drove the segment’s year-over-year earnings increase (Executive VP & CFO Pitz).
Wesley Carmichael, Wells Fargo: asked for Beam strategic rationale and 2027 capital implications; President of Benefits & Protection Friedrich said Beam has "a great relationship with 25,000 small business employers" and "400,000 members" and described technology in "underwriting and quoting" as additive; Executive VP & CFO Pitz said the company feels "very good about our capital position" and reiterated no change to earnings/free capital flow/ROE outlook.
Wesley Carmichael, Wells Fargo: asked about VII expectations; Executive VP & CFO Pitz said results were helped by "no real estate transactions" and said management "fully expect" improvement to continue through the remaining quarters of 2026.
Ryan Krueger, KBW: asked if equity outflows could persist; President & CEO of Principal Asset Management Kamal Bhatia said outflows were "concentrated with a couple of U.S. active equity strategies" that are "slightly more than 5% of our firm AUM" and said net flows may be "somewhat challenged" while the committed not-funded pipeline is "around $10 billion."
Ryan Krueger, KBW: asked about fee rate and severance; President & CEO Bhatia said fee rate was "slightly softer" and severance across IM and IP was "around $7 million" in the quarter.
Wilma Jackson Burdis, Raymond James: asked about lower dental ratios; President Friedrich cited "dental network optimization" and referenced the "DentaNet acquisition" adding "1,500 providers" in Alabama, and said she expects the loss ratio "will continue to go down" into the second half.
Wilma Jackson Burdis, Raymond James: asked how Beam improves existing business; President Friedrich said Beam "leases their dental network" and expects expense synergies by removing lease costs, plus broader use of Beam’s micro-market quoting to improve efficiency and growth.
Joel Hurwitz, Dowling: asked about favorable life and disability results; President Friedrich said disability was driven by "lower incidence" with LTD recoveries "right in line with expectations" and added, "I don't expect disability loss ratios to improve further from first half results" while maintaining a full-year view below the low end of the loss-ratio range.
Joel Hurwitz, Dowling: asked about further M&A; President, CEO & Chair Strable said, "we don't comment on market rumors" and added, "we're not interested in doing deals solely for scale" and see M&A as "an opportunistic accelerator than a requirement."
Pablo Singzon, JPMorgan: asked about plan count and participant trends; President of Retirement & Income Solutions Christopher Littlefield said "participants up, deferrals up, retention very high" while plan count is "staying flat to maybe slightly down" due to deemphasizing micro plans.
Pablo Singzon, JPMorgan: asked if competitive pricing is changing; President Friedrich said the company avoided certain dental pricing previously and now sees "more opportunities to write business at rates that make sense," highlighting that "over 95% of our disability premium is going to be tied to another product" in its bundled approach.
Suneet Kamath, Jefferies: asked if Beam fits prior M&A budget framing; President, CEO & Chair Strable said she targets "0% to 10% of our annual free cash flow toward M&A" while keeping low leverage for flexibility.
Suneet Kamath, Jefferies: asked how Principal defines DC scale; President Littlefield said "the most important" measure is participants and noted "At 14 million Americans covered by the plans that we serve, we feel like we're at scale."
Joshua Shanker, BofA: pressed on whether factor environment could keep weighing on flows; President & CEO Bhatia cited a quality dispersion example and said timing is hard, adding, "predicting an immediate flow reversal or even predicting it over the next 6 months would not be prudent."
Michael Ward, UBS: asked how 2Q Benefits compares to a normal quarter and sustainability; President Friedrich said earnings are being driven by underwriting and expects dental underwriting to improve in 2H and premium growth to "accelerate in the second half"; President, CEO & Chair Strable said results were driven more by "incidence and frequency" than severity.
Michael Ward, UBS: asked about data center froth and fixed income; President & CEO Bhatia said fixed income engagement is improving and that in data centers the firm participates "pretty much as a real estate equity investor" and focuses on "small to mid-market size" deals.
Taylor Scott, Barclays: asked about expense/margin tradeoffs; President, CEO & Chair Strable said the company will maintain discipline and "not shrink ourselves to greatness"; Executive VP & CFO Pitz said investment needs are "not going to be excuse not to hit our numbers."
Taylor Scott, Barclays: asked about Morningstar 10-year equity performance and flow impacts; President & CEO Bhatia said the "10-year number is important" but "the 3- and 5-year number" matters more for Morningstar, and said the deterioration reflects style headwinds while monitoring remains important.
Analyst sentiment was slightly negative to pressing around Asset Management outflows, fee rate pressure, and whether style factors could keep flows weak, including questions probing persistence and timing.
Management sentiment was slightly positive in prepared remarks and more cautious in Q&A, with repeated framing around uncertainty and timing such as "very difficult to predict" and "would not be prudent" (President & CEO Bhatia).
Compared with Q1, Q2 tone shifted toward defending Investment Management outflows ("meaningful number") while maintaining confidence on capital and portfolio actions (President & CEO Bhatia; President, CEO & Chair Strable).
Q2 added a new portfolio catalyst with the announced Beam Benefits acquisition, whereas Q1 discussion centered more on organic momentum and earlier, smaller dental-network M&A.
Investment Management shifted from Q1 commentary about redemptions in a "small number" of U.S. equity mutual funds and expectations that "redemption activity normalizes" to Q2’s disclosure of "approximately $11 billion" total company net outflows concentrated in U.S. active equity strategies (President, CEO & Chair Strable).
Capital return and dividend continued to step up, with Q2 announcing a "$0.84 per share dividend" vs. Q1’s "$0.82" (Executive VP & CFO Pitz).
"Total company net outflows of approximately $11 billion" were described as concentrated in U.S. active equity strategies facing "acute headwinds" in an "unusual market environment" (President, CEO & Chair Strable).
Management cited event risk and volatility affecting institutional activity, with President & CEO Bhatia noting 2Q gross sales were impacted as "many institutional investors delayed mandates" due to "conflict in Middle East" and market volatility.
Principal management emphasized enterprise earnings and margin expansion alongside stepped-up shareholder returns, while positioning the Beam Benefits acquisition as strategically focused on SMB distribution and aligned with its capital framework. In Q&A, leadership spent substantial time addressing Asset Management outflows concentrated in select U.S. active equity strategies and framed the flow outlook as challenged but supported by a growing not-funded pipeline, while Benefits and Protection leadership tightened underwriting expectations to below the low end of its full-year loss-ratio guidance range.
