BNP Paribas has upgraded fertilizer giant Nutrien (NTR) to Outperform from Neutral, arguing that strengthening agricultural fundamentals and mounting global crop risks could fuel higher fertilizer demand and push corn prices toward $6 per bushel over the next year. Nutrien (NTR) rose 3.2% Tuesday.
"We upgrade Nutrien to Outperform as ag indicators continue to flash green," Symonds wrote, arguing that the stock's recent pullback has created a more attractive entry point after investors previously bid fertilizer names higher amid Middle East tensions.
The centerpiece of the report is BNP Paribas' increasingly optimistic outlook for corn prices.
Symonds believes a combination of worsening weather conditions in the U.S. Corn Belt, European crop losses and continued geopolitical disruptions could tighten grain supplies enough to lift corn above $6 per bushel, well above the roughly $4.54 front-month price used in the report.
The firm argues that July's hot, dry weather has become increasingly concerning because it coincides with corn's pollination period, when moisture is critical for yields.
According to BNP's analysis, roughly 30% of the U.S. Corn Belt now faces a 10% to 20% soil moisture deficit, conditions that resemble drought years such as 2022 and 2023 rather than the nearly ideal 2025 growing season. The bank estimates current conditions imply corn yields of about 180.4 bushels per acre, below the USDA's forecast of 183 bushels.
If those lower yields materialize, grain inventories could tighten significantly.
BNP Paribas says the bullish case extends well beyond U.S. weather.
The report points to several simultaneous pressures on global grain supplies:
A European heatwave that has reduced wheat production forecasts.Escalating attacks on grain infrastructure around the Black Sea.Risks to Russian wheat exports. The potential for renewed Iran-related disruptions that could increase biofuel demand while reducing fertilizer availability.
The analysts estimate Europe's grain shortfall alone could increase U.S. corn exports by 100 million to 120 million bushels, while disruptions around the Black Sea could further tighten global wheat supplies.
BNP also notes that today's corn-to-wheat price relationship has historically preceded stronger corn prices. Since 1980, corn has risen an average of 17% over the following six months when the ratio has fallen below current levels.
Higher crop prices generally improve farmers' willingness to spend on fertilizer, and BNP believes Nutrien is particularly well positioned because of its diversified business.
The company operates across potash, phosphate and nitrogen fertilizers while also maintaining one of the industry's largest agricultural retail operations.
Symonds argues Nutrien's potash business would benefit the most from a corn rally because potash demand has historically shown the greatest sensitivity to improved farm economics. Phosphate demand could also strengthen as affordability improves, while Nutrien's retail operations would likely benefit because corn represents an important customer market.
The analysts also praised management's capital allocation strategy, highlighting recent portfolio actions such as the Trinidad shutdown, the ongoing phosphate review and continued share repurchases.
Despite the more constructive outlook, BNP argues the shares remain undervalued.
The bank estimates Nutrien will generate a 10% to 11% free cash flow yield annually through 2029, a valuation it considers too low given the company's business quality, management execution and improving agricultural backdrop.
Lead analyst David Symonds, along with Laurent Favre, raised the firm's price target to $80 from the equivalent of roughly $70, implying about 19% upside from Nutrien's July 27 closing price of $67.40.
The report acknowledges several risks that could undermine the bullish thesis, including improved U.S. weather, easing geopolitical tensions, successful rerouting of Black Sea grain exports or stronger-than-expected crop production elsewhere in the world. Still, BNP concludes that the balance of risks has shifted in Nutrien's favor, prompting its return to a bullish rating.
