Nucor (NUE) rallied 7.2% on Tuesday to within $1 of its all-time closing high after easily beating Q2 adjusted earnings estimates and steel shipments reached a record-high 7.1M tons, as prices continued to increase from tariffs.
Q2 net profit nearly doubled to $1.16B, or $5.04/share, from $603M, or $2.60/share, in the year-earlier quarter, and revenue jumped 9% Q/Q and 23% Y/Y to $10.4B, driven primarily by an increase in earnings in the steel mills segment, which enjoyed higher average selling prices and volumes.
Q2 earnings in the steel mills segment climbed 38% Q/Q and nearly double from a year ago to $1.6B, as Nucor's (NUE) average selling price for steel was $1,145/ton, up $71 from the previous quarter.
Nucor (NUE) said it expects higher total earnings in Q3 but did not disclose a specific range; the company expects an increase in earnings in its steel mills segment due to higher realized pricing across all major product categories, increased earnings in its steel products segment due to higher volumes and realized pricing, and lower earnings in its raw materials segment due to lower margins.
U.S. steel producers have largely benefited this year from the Trump administration's Section 232 tariffs, which placed a 50% tax on imported goods made almost entirely of aluminum, steel, or copper, and Nucor (NUE) CEO Leon Topalian credited Trump's aggressive use of tariffs for the company's strong quarter.
"Vigorous enforcement of our trade laws is curtailing the flood of unfairly traded steel into the U.S. market," the CEO said on the company's earnings conference call, adding that strong demand for steel is draining domestic stocks, leaving long waits for orders that are causing buyers to shop offshore even with the 50% tariff on imports.
Imports comprised 16.4% of the U.S. flat-rolled steel market in Q2, up from 14.4% in Q1 but down from 22% in early 2025.
"If you asked me five years ago, would I take 16% overall imports into the U.S.? All freaking day long!" Topalian said on the call.
