Shares of memory and AI-related stocks were largely in the green premarket on Wednesday after yesterday's onslaught following South Korean tech giant SK hynix's ( SKHY ) ( HXSCL ) second quarter results, which highlighted consistent high demand for the company's chips. However, memory chip heavyweight SK hynix tumbled nearly 10% on the Korea exchange after the company's revenue and operating profit missed estimates. The reported revenue of 79.32T won, up 257% year over year, but missed estimates. SK hynix reported an operating profit of 60.5T won, compared to 9.2T won a year earlier, but it fell short of the 64T won forecast by LSEG SmartEstimate, as per a Reuters report . The quarterly operating profit surged more than sixfold to a record high, but it said delays in shipments of some advanced products limited price gains for its dynamic random access memory, or DRAM, chips. But despite the market selloff, SK hynix noted that the demand for AI memory chips remains strong. The company said that with major tech companies increasing their AI infrastructure investments, additional supply requests continue to mount. As these investments are supported by revenue generated from AI services, the momentum in memory demand is expected to persist. SK hynix added that based on this demand outlook, it is expanding multi-year contract discussions with customers to secure mid-to-long-term supply stability. The company has finalized Long-Term Agreements, or LTAs, with around 10 customers. "Major customers are still requesting more memory supply," SK hynix President Song Hyun-jong said on the earnings call. South Korean memory chip rival Samsung Electronics ( SSNLF ) fell about 5%. The companies dragged down South Korea's Kospi Index, which sank 5.98%. However, SK hynix's ADR ( SKHY ) was in the green premarket on Wednesday. "SK Hijinx call has something for bears and bulls: demand great, capacity additions, great. I mean this thing is all over the place. And so is the stock. We have news reports calling the quarter amazing and others calling it disappointing. And this is the most important stock out there," said CNBC's Jim Cramer in a post on X. Japan's chip-heavy Nikkei 225 index fell about 1.49%, while the broader Topix climbed around 0.26%. Memory maker Kioxia plummeted around 14% and Tokyo Electron tumbled about 11%. Semiconductor test equipment maker Advantest ( ATEYY ) dipped only about 1% after raising its outlook . The company expects operating profit to grow 70% in the year to March, up from its previous forecast for a 26% growth. Analysts on average expected a 42% increase, according to Bloomberg News. For the first quarter, the company's operating income surged 53% year-over-year to ¥190 billion ($1.2 billion), versus analyst expectations for a 28% growth. American memory giant Micron Technology ( MU ) — which competes with Samsung Electronics ( SSNLF ) and SK hynix to provide HBM chips to Nvidia ( NVDA ) — rose about 1% premarket on Wednesday. Sandisk ( SNDK ) also climbed around 1%. Western Digital ( WDC ) soared about 4%, while Seagate Technology ( STX ) surged nearly 7%. Shares of AI chipmaker Nvidia ( NVDA ) were largely flat but in the green, while Advanced Micro Devices ( AMD ), Qualcomm ( QCOM ), and Broadcom ( AVGO ) each climbed around 1%. Cerebras ( CBRS ) was also among the gains. Other AI and networking-related stocks were also in the green premarket on Wednesday. Lumentum ( LITE ) jumped around 3%, while Applied Optoelectronics ( AAOI ) and Coherent ( COHR ) each rose about 2%. Corning ( GLW ), Ciena ( CIEN ), and Cisco ( CSCO ) each climbed about 1% , while Arista Networks ( ANET ) and Celestica ( CLS ) were also among the gains. Texas Instruments ( TXN ) jumped around 4%, Intel ( INTC ) rose about 2%, and Marvell Technology ( MRVL ), GlobalFoundries ( GFS ), Analog Devices ( ADI ), and Arm ( ARM ) each climbed nearly 1%. However, Lattice Semiconductor ( LSCC ) dipped nearly 1%, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing ( TSM ) was also in the red. Chip equipment makers: Shares of ASML ( ASML ) rose about 2%. However, Applied Materials ( AMAT ) and Lam Research ( LRCX ) each fell nearly 1%, while KLA ( KLAC ) declined about 7% despite fiscal fourth-quarter results and outlook beating estimates.
