General Dynamics (GD) beat Wall Street's expectations for both revenue and earnings in the second quarter as strong demand across its aerospace and defense businesses drove higher sales, profits and orders. The company's shares were little changed in premarket trading Wednesday after closing Tuesday up about 17% for the year.
For investors, the results reinforce a favorable trend across the defense sector, where sustained military spending and expanding order books continue to support long-term revenue visibility. General Dynamics (GD) also benefited from growing demand for Gulfstream business jets, while its shipbuilding business continued to work through a massive multiyear backlog.
General Dynamics (GD) reported second-quarter revenue of $14.09 billion, up 8.1% from a year earlier and above analysts' consensus estimate of $13.54 billion.
Net income rose to $1.16 billion, or $4.24 per share, from $1.01 billion, or $3.74 per share, with earnings topping the Wall Street consensus estimate of $3.97 a share.
"Our businesses delivered solid results in the quarter, with revenue growth across all four segments," Chair and Chief Executive Officer Phebe Novakovic said.
General Dynamics (GD) generated $1.9 billion in cash from operating activities during the quarter, equal to 162% of net earnings. The company paid $429 million in dividends, invested $234 million in capital expenditures and reduced debt by $498 million.
The company's aerospace segment, home to its well-known Gulfstream business jets, led growth with revenue rising 15.1% to $3.53 billion while operating earnings climbed 26.6%. Gulfstream delivered 41 aircraft during the quarter, up from 38 a year earlier. Marine Systems revenue increased 10.4%, reflecting continued demand for nuclear-powered submarines and other naval programs.
Combat Systems, which manufactures products including Abrams main battle tanks, Stryker armored vehicles and munitions, posted relatively flat revenue, while the Technologies segment grew 4.1%.
Orders remained strong throughout the business. General Dynamics (GD) booked $20 billion in total orders during the quarter, producing a company-wide book-to-bill ratio of 1.4-to-1. Backlog ended the quarter at $136.5 billion, with estimated total contract value reaching $186.9 billion when unfunded contract opportunities and options are included.
