Canfor (CFPZF) said late Tuesday it will permanently close its Fox Creek sawmill in Fox Creek, Alberta, citing weak market conditions, persistently high U.S. softwood lumber duties and tariffs, and fibre supply impacts due to recent wildfires.
The Fox Creek closure, which is expected to be concluded by late summer, and eliminate 120M board feet of production capacity, the company said.
The sawmill was destroyed by a fire in 2008 and rebuilt in 2011, then was purchased by Canfor (CFPZF) in 2021, along with two others in Alberta, saying at the time it would help the company expand its operating platform.
Earlier this month, Canfor (CFPZF) closed a pulp mill in British Columbia, citing oversupply in global markets.
The U.S. Lumber Coalition said recently that President Trump's tariffs on Canadian lumber have reduced Canada's share of the U.S. forest products market to 19%, from 34% in 2016.
