Vulcan Materials (VMC) shares rose about 1.2% in the first hour of trading Wednesday after the construction materials producer reported quarterly results that topped Wall Street expectations, driven by higher pricing and disciplined cost control in its core aggregates business. The stock is up about 2.4% year to date.
The company reported second-quarter revenue of $2.16 billion, up from $2.10 billion a year earlier and ahead of the Wall Street consensus estimate of $2.14 billion.
Adjusted earnings were $2.59 a share, topping analysts' estimate of $2.47.
Net income rose to $323.4 million, or $2.48 a share, from $320.9 million, or $2.42 a share.
For investors, the results reinforce a trend that has supported construction materials producers despite an uneven building market. Public infrastructure spending and large construction projects continue to underpin demand for crushed stone, sand and gravel, allowing Vulcan Materials (VMC) to raise prices even as higher fuel costs and unfavorable weather pressure operating expenses. The company's decision to reaffirm its full-year outlook suggests management expects those favorable demand trends to continue.
Chief Executive Officer Ronnie Pruitt said, "Commercial and operational execution drove solid results in the second quarter."
Vulcan Materials (VMC), the nation's largest producer of construction aggregates, said aggregates shipments increased 1% from a year earlier to 59.9 million tons, supported by healthy public construction activity and large projects. Heavy rainfall in Texas and parts of the Southeast weighed on volumes during May and June, but the company continued to benefit from pricing discipline across its footprint. Freight-adjusted selling prices rose 5% on a mix-adjusted basis and 4% on a reported basis.
The aggregates segment remained the company's primary earnings engine. Gross profit increased to $567 million while cash gross profit per ton improved to $12.02 from $11.88 a year earlier despite higher diesel fuel costs. Excluding fuel inflation, cash cost of sales increased just 3%, reflecting ongoing cost management efforts.
The asphalt and concrete businesses produced mixed results. Asphalt gross profit margins remained a healthy 15% despite lower shipment volumes and higher liquid asphalt costs. Concrete results reflected two months of operations before the company completed the divestiture of its California ready-mixed concrete business in early June.
Vulcan Materials (VMC) reported adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $654 million, compared with $660 million a year earlier. The slight decline reflected weather-related disruptions and energy inflation, although profitability remained strong with an adjusted margin of 30.3%. Subsequent references use the abbreviation ebitda.
During the quarter, Vulcan Materials (VMC) repurchased $250 million of stock, paid $68 million in dividends and completed the sale of its California ready-mixed concrete operations. The company also acquired a quarry in southern Colorado and a rail yard in the Dallas-Fort Worth area from Brannan Sand & Gravel to expand its aggregates distribution network.
Management reaffirmed its full-year outlook, forecasting adjusted ebitda of $2.4 billion to $2.6 billion. The company said continued aggregates price growth, public infrastructure projects and large private developments should support volume growth through the remainder of 2026.
