Eni (E) up 7.1% in Wednesday's trading after reporting better-than-expected Q2 results and raising its stock buyback program by €600M to €3.4B (~$3.87B), and saying it may pay an extra dividend in Q4 if Brent crude prices remain substantially above its forecasts.
Eni (E) boosted its share buyback in April to up to €2.8B in a bid to return more of the Middle East war-induced cash windfall to shareholders.
Q2 adjusted net profit more than doubled from the year-earlier quarter to €2.33B, hitting its best level in three years and beating the €2.09B analyst consensus, aided by 7% production growth.
The company said it is now targeting underlying oil and gas production growth of ~5%, compared with its previous 3%-4% target.
On the back of the latest results, Eni (E) said it now expects its underlying cash flow from operations to grow more strongly and reach €15B.
"Adjusted net income betters market consensus, driven by gains in gas trading, a positive contribution from elevated biofuels margins and from a lower tax charge in the core upstream business," Citi analysts said in a note.
Eni (E) also said it will receive a $2B capital contribution from Ares Management (ARES) under a partnership agreement involving some of the company's oil and gas infrastructures.
Eni (E) is negotiating new contracts for its oil and gas projects in Venezuela and expects fast development for the Junin 5 oilfield once investment restarts, CEO Claudio Descalzi said in the company's earnings conference call, according to Reuters.
"It's not really a standard upstream project where you have to invest for four or five years... it will be very fast," the CEO said, adding the company aims to sign a production sharing contract and not a joint venture on the oilfield.
Junin 5 production could surge to a plateau level of 200K bbl/day of oil from the current 12K, Eni (E) said.
