MPLX (MPLX) down 1.4% in Wednesday's trading after hitting a multiyear intraday high of $60 earlier in the day, as Wolfe Research downgraded the midstream energy company to Peer Perform from Outperform, saying the stock has "become too dependent on trusting management to still hit targets despite disappointing 2025-26 organic EBITDA growth."
Wolfe analyst Keith Stanley says MLPX (MPLX) offers an attractive 7% yield with plans to further increase the distribution by 12.5% in each of Q4 2026 and Q4 2027, which could help to set a yield floor on the stock around a 9% yield—an attractive total return.
But the analyst increasingly views the way the company executes on its plan as risky and highly dependent on acquisitions, particularly after disappointing growth in 2025-26, which could bring a high yield but also very low distribution coverage and a more levered balance sheet.
Additionally, the rapid distribution growth plan is important to sponsor Marathon Petroleum (MPC), which could create a divergence of interests with MPLX (MPLX) unitholders, Stanley adds.
