Airbus (EADSF)(EADSY) is accelerating efforts to expand the firefighting role of its A400M military transport aircraft as increasingly severe wildfires sweep across southern Europe, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday.
Speaking after the company reported first-half results, Chief Executive Guillaume Faury said Airbus (EADSF)(EADSY) is enhancing the aircraft's firefighting capabilities to better support government agencies and military operators responding to large-scale blazes in countries such as France and Spain.
Faury said Airbus (EADSF)(EADSY) believes governments will increasingly need larger and more capable firefighting assets as wildfires become more frequent and destructive. He said the company sees growing demand for solutions that can support emergency response efforts as both the number and intensity of wildfires continue to increase.
For investors, the comments underscore how Airbus (EADSF)(EADSY) is looking to broaden the mission profile of its defense platforms beyond traditional military applications. The initiative comes as the company benefits from strong momentum in its Defence and Space business, where first-half revenue rose 9% and adjusted operating profit climbed 84% year over year. Airbus (EADSF)(EADSY) also reaffirmed its 2026 guidance, citing confidence in commercial aircraft deliveries and defense demand despite supply chain challenges and global trade uncertainty.
Airbus (EADSF)(EADSY) also envisions combining capabilities across its businesses to support wildfire management, including earth observation satellites, drones, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft for detection, monitoring and firefighting operations.
The comments come as France and Spain battle some of Europe's most severe wildfires this summer. Successive heat waves have dried vegetation across the region, fueling rapidly spreading fires that have forced hundreds of thousands of residents and tourists to evacuate. Greece has also been hit by deadly blazes.
Earlier this month, seven NATO members, including Belgium, Croatia, France, Poland, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom, agreed to establish a multinational fleet of A400M aircraft, potentially expanding opportunities for the platform's military and humanitarian missions.
Unlike Canada's specialized water bombers, Airbus (EADSF)(EADSY) does not manufacture a dedicated firefighting aircraft. The company is instead developing ways to adapt the A400M's existing capabilities for aerial firefighting and disaster response.
The company reported first-half revenue of €33.2 billion, up 12% from a year earlier, driven by higher commercial aircraft deliveries and improved defense performance. Adjusted EBIT rose 24% to €2.73 billion, while Airbus (EADSF)(EADSY) maintained its forecast for about 870 commercial aircraft deliveries, €7.5 billion in adjusted EBIT and €4.5 billion in free cash flow before customer financing for 2026.
