Best Buy (BBY) is moving ahead with a smaller-store strategy to expand its reach and test new shopping patterns. The retailer is opening new small-format stores, ranging from 12K to 15K square feet, which are significantly smaller than its medium-format stores and flagship locations.
Recently, Best Buy (BBY) opened smaller stores in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. "What we’re finding is that there are markets that we just can’t be in with a traditional size Best Buy store, but they’re markets that absolutely make sense for Best Buy from a reach perspective," CEO Jason Bonfig told CNBC about the initiative.
A smaller-sized store is not an entirely new idea for Best Buy (BBY). The company already piloted a 5K-square-foot, digital-first store in Monroe, North Carolina, designed around curated products, expert help, pickup lockers, and mobile self-checkout, while excluding major appliances and other large items. Bonfig highlighted that Best Buy Canada has been investigating the small-format store for an extended period of time.
Best Buy (BBY) is lined up to report third quarter earnings on August 27. Analysts expect revenue of $9.5B and EPS of $1.34 to be disclosed.
Shares of Best Buy (BBY) slipped 1.1% in premarket trading. For the year, Best Buy (BBY) is up more than 28%.
