AstraZeneca (AZN) tops pharmaceutical growth rankings while Bristol Myers Squibb (BMY) trails, as the two drugmakers reportedly explore a potential merger that could create one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies.
According to a recent Financial Times report, AstraZeneca and Bristol Myers Squibb have held preliminary discussions about a possible combination that would create a drugmaker with a combined market value approaching $400 billion.
While the talks remain at an early stage and may not result in a transaction, the companies occupy opposite ends of Seeking Alpha's Quant Growth rankings among major pharmaceutical stocks.
AstraZeneca, with a market capitalization of $264.05 billion, leads a list of 10 pharmaceutical companies with a Growth Grade of A, reflecting strong expansion metrics relative to peers. Bristol Myers Squibb, valued at roughly $133 billion, ranks last on the list with a Growth Grade of D, highlighting a markedly weaker growth profile.
Joining AstraZeneca at the top of the rankings are Corcept Therapeutics (CORT), Daiichi Sankyo (DSNKY), Jazz Pharmaceuticals (JAZZ) and Eli Lilly (LLY), all of which earned A growth grades. Galderma Group (GALDY) follows with an A- rating.
The remaining companies fall into the middle and lower tiers of the rankings. UCB (UCBJY) received a B+ grade, followed by Axsome Therapeutics (AXSM) with a C+ and Sandoz Group (SDZNY) with a C-.
Seeking Alpha's Growth Factor Grade is a quantitative measure that evaluates a company's growth prospects using metrics such as revenue growth, earnings expansion, cash flow trends and forward expectations. Companies are assigned letter grades ranging from A+ to F, with higher grades indicating stronger growth characteristics relative to sector peers.
If completed, a merger between AstraZeneca and Bristol Myers Squibb would combine one of the sector's strongest growth-rated pharmaceutical companies with one that currently ranks near the bottom on growth metrics.
According to the Financial Times, the combination could significantly expand AstraZeneca's presence in the U.S. market while creating a broader portfolio spanning oncology, cardiovascular and specialty medicines.
