Northrop Grumman (NOC) has signed two multi-year framework agreements worth more than $3 billion to expand production of components for two of the U.S. military's key missile defense systems, reflecting continued government efforts to increase munitions output amid rising global demand.
The agreements cover production of solid rocket motors and related components for Lockheed Martin's (LMT) Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement interceptor, along with structural components for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system. The company said it will work with the U.S. Department of War and Lockheed Martin under the long-term arrangements.
The larger agreement, valued at more than $2 billion, covers production of solid rocket motors and ignition safety devices for PAC-3 MSE interceptors. A separate framework agreement worth more than $1 billion supports increased production of THAAD components over the next seven years.
For investors, the agreements add to Northrop Grumman's (NOC) long-term visibility in one of the fastest-growing segments of the defense market. The contracts underscore sustained U.S. and allied demand for missile defense systems as governments increase military spending and replenish weapons stockpiles, while providing another indication that defense contractors are securing multi-year production commitments rather than relying solely on annual procurement cycles.
Northrop said it expects to significantly increase PAC-3 MSE solid rocket motor production during the seven-year agreement. The company said the expansion supports U.S. Army plans to increase annual missile production from roughly 600 interceptors today to several thousand in the coming years for domestic and allied customers.
The company also said it plans to substantially increase monthly deliveries of THAAD components under the separate framework agreement.
Northrop attributed the production increases to manufacturing investments made since 2021. The company said it has doubled tactical solid rocket motor capacity at its Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in West Virginia and expects to triple production capability there by 2027. It is also expanding capacity at facilities in Utah and Elkton, Maryland.
According to Northrop, it has invested more than $2 billion in munitions-related technologies and manufacturing facilities since 2019, including more than $1 billion dedicated to solid rocket motor production.
Ben Davies, Northrop Grumman's corporate vice president, said those investments have enabled the company to shift from steady-state manufacturing to higher production rates more quickly as demand for munitions has increased.
Northrop has supplied structural components for the THAAD interceptor since 2002 and said its San Diego manufacturing facility has decades of experience producing components for defense and aerospace programs. The company also said it has delivered more than 1.3 million solid rocket motors over the past 70 years.
