EBay’s (EBAY) recent acquisition of fashion marketplace Depop will come at a cost, as the emergence of competitors like Vinted will require increased ad spending that will take a bite out of profitability.
Accordingly, Wells Fargo downgraded eBay (EBAY) to Underweight from Equal Weight and lowered its price target by 12% to $92, representing a 20% downside to Friday’s closing price.
As a direct competitor to Depop, Vinted entered the U.S. market with an aggressive marketing campaign, reaching ~127% of Depop’s U.S. ad impressions in April and scaling U.S. daily average users (DAU) to 20% of Depop’s base. As a result, Depop has increased its ad spending “materially” to a level that is estimated to be 3x more than Vinted’s elevated spending.
Wells Fargo analyst Ken Gawrelski believes eBay's (EBAY) use of Depop to compete against Vinted after limited success in the UK and Germany is a "strategically sound move."
But while Depop should support faster [gross merchandise value] growth and strengthen eBay’s competitive positioning, Gawrelski sees "a risk to FY27 EPS consensus estimates given outsized investment in Depop sales and marketing,” adding that he could become more constructive if Depop requires less investment or if Vinted’s U.S. ad spending slows.
Gawrelski’s Underweight rating comes with a caution should GameStop (GME) raise its stake in eBay (EBAY). GameStop (GME) currently owns a 10% stake in eBay (EBAY) with the intention of owning the company outright.
GameStop (GME) last offered $125 per share, an offer that was rejected by eBay’s (EBAY) board for being “neither credible nor attractive.”
