FINRA fined UBS Financial Services, part of Swiss bank UBS Group (UBS), $20M for failing to effectively implement an anti-money laundering compliance program for certain foreign currency transactions, the brokerage regulator said Monday.
UBS Financial didn't "reasonably implement its customer due diligence program with respect to certain retail customers and failed to timely detect and report suspicious money movements by those customers," FINRA said.
The new fine follows a 2018 fine of $4.5M for failing to reasonably monitor foreign currency wires, which allow customers to send and receive foreign currency. A subsequent routine examination by FINRA found that UBS Financial didn't remediate the foreign currency wire monitoring violations. As a result, the program failures relating to the foreign currency wires persisted through June 2023.
FINRA specified that between January 2019 and June 2023, UBS Financial (UBS) failed to reasonably monitor more than 60,000 foreign currency wires totaling more than $10B.
UBS (UBS) stock edged down 0.1% in premarket trading.
