John Williams, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, supported the Federal Open Market Committee's decision to hold rates at 3.50%-3.75% at its meeting last week. That's because he expects inflation to ease for the rest of the year and next year, he said in an interview published on Monday.
But he's quick to add that the central bank will act if price pressures don't cool enough to put inflation on a path to return to the Federal Reserve's 2% target. Williams's base case foresees inflation reaching that point in 2028, after exceeding that level for more than seven years.
"If the economy is not on a trajectory that will bring inflation back down to 2%… it would absolutely be appropriate to act to get us on a trajectory that does bring inflation back to 2%," he told Reuters in an interview on Friday.
He argues that energy prices and tariffs have peaked and are poised to fade while the economy has remained strong. Williams expects that those factors driving inflation "will not be at play as much, and then some of the disinflationary forces that we've been seeing" should re-emerge, he said.
Meanwhile, he repeated his view that the Fed's policy rate is “well positioned” to bring inflation back to target. That perspective, though, clashes with the three FOMC members who voted for a 25-basis-point rate hike at the meeting. They argued that the Fed's current policy isn't restrictive enough to rein in inflation. "Businesses describe pricing pressures as broadening rather than fading, and consumers are expressing despair over persistently higher prices," Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said in a statement after Wednesday's meeting.
Williams said in the interview, "I am quite honestly focused quite a bit on what are we seeing in the core inflation data over the next several months, and is that consistent with a kind of a run rate of inflation moving towards 2% and really on a disinflationary path consistent with us achieving our 2% inflation goal on a sustained basis by 2028."
