Midday Need to Know: ISM beats, Amazon hits $3T & more
Wall Street’s major market averages pushed higher on Monday as investors looked forward to a busy week of corporate ear…
不做 Marriott International(MAR.US)
Amazon(AMZN.US)

Wall Street’s major market averages pushed higher on Monday as investors looked forward to a busy week of corporate earnings and key labor market data.
The blue-chip Dow (DJI) was +1%, the benchmark S&P 500 (SP500) was +1.3%, and the tech-focused Nasdaq Composite (COMP:IND) was +2%.
Now, here are four news stories that broke in the morning to watch out for:
U.S. manufacturing activity hits three-year high in July: The Institute for Supply Management's Manufacturing PMI climbed to 55.6 in July from 53.3 in June, beating the 53.8 consensus and marking its highest reading since May 2022. The index remained in expansion territory for a seventh consecutive month, supported by broad-based strength across subcomponents. Production surged to 58.5 from 52.2, new orders rose to 56.7, and new export orders returned to expansion at 53.0, while the prices index eased to 71.1 from 73.0, suggesting inflationary pressures moderated even as factory activity accelerated.
Marriott slips despite raising RevPAR outlook: Marriott International (MAR) fell ahead of Monday's open after reporting mixed second-quarter results. While adjusted EPS of $3.19 beat estimates by $0.11, revenue missed Wall Street expectations by about $120 million, and third-quarter EPS guidance of $2.74-$2.82 came in below the $2.87 consensus. The hotel operator raised its full-year RevPAR growth forecast to 3%-3.5% from 2%-3%, supported by 5% growth in the U.S. and Canada and resilient demand across Asia, though a 43% decline in Middle East RevPAR continued to weigh on international performance.
Amazon tops $3 trillion market cap as AWS fuels rally: Amazon (AMZN) gained nearly 5% to a record high after its post-earnings rally extended, pushing the e-commerce giant's market capitalization above $3 trillion and joining Nvidia (NVDA), Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL), and Alphabet (GOOG) in the exclusive club. Second-quarter revenue rose 20% year over year to $200.6 billion, while AWS revenue accelerated 36.7% to $42.2 billion and operating income climbed 43% to $27.5 billion.
Oil tumbles as Trump pauses Iran strikes, signals renewed talks: Crude oil prices dropped sharply after President Donald Trump said planned U.S. strikes on Iran had been suspended and that talks aimed at ending the conflict would begin Monday, with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz among the issues under discussion. Iran denied that negotiations with Washington were underway but confirmed discussions with Oman regarding the strategic waterway. September WTI crude fell more than 6% to around $79.38 a barrel, while Brent dropped 5% to roughly $83.55, as traders priced in a lower risk of immediate supply disruptions despite lingering geopolitical uncertainty.
