3D Systems (DDD) reported second quarter results that topped Wall Street expectations for both revenue and adjusted earnings, as growth in healthcare and demand for metal and polymer 3D printers helped offset continued softness in parts of its industrial business. Investors cheered the results, sending the shares up 6.7% in extended trading Monday after the stock had already climbed about 60% during the regular session.
Revenue slipped 0.3% from a year earlier to $94.6 million, narrowly beating the Wall Street consensus estimate of $93.7 million. Adjusted loss was $0.04 a share, better than analysts' expectation for a loss of $0.05 a share.
The company said healthcare remained its largest business during the quarter, with revenue rising 6.8% as Med Tech grew more than 20% and dental sales increased 3%. Industrial revenue declined 6.7%, though aerospace and defense as well as data center infrastructure each posted growth of more than 20%.
For investors, the results suggest that 3D Systems (DDD) is beginning to emerge from a prolonged downturn in the additive manufacturing industry. The company has been trimming costs, selling non-core software assets and concentrating on faster-growing markets including medical technology, dental, aerospace and defense and data center infrastructure.
Management also pointed to improving demand for new printer systems, particularly metal printing platforms, even as broader industrial spending remains uneven.
Net loss fell to $12.9 million, or $0.09 a share, from net income of $104.4 million, or $0.57 a share, a year earlier. The year-earlier quarter included gains from the sale of the Geomagic software business and debt extinguishment that did not recur.
The company's loss before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization improved to $0.8 million from a loss of $4.7 million a year earlier, reflecting the impact of previous cost-cutting initiatives and tariff refunds recovered during the quarter.
President and Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Graves said, "We are pleased with our second-quarter and first-half performance on both the top and bottom line."
For the third quarter, 3D Systems (DDD) forecast revenue of $96 million to $99 million and projected an adjusted ebitda loss of $1 million to $3 million.
The company is known for its industrial and healthcare 3D printers, additive manufacturing materials and software used in medical, dental and aerospace applications.
