More than 1,300 unionized workers voted this week to authorize a strike as negotiations over a new labor agreement stalled ahead of the August 31 expiration of their current contract.
The workforce includes hotel and food-service employees such as housekeepers, cooks, servers, bartenders, cleaners, dishwashers, drivers, cocktail servers, bar porters, and slot attendants. The workers are represented primarily by the Unite Here Local 26 and Teamsters Local 25 unions.
Workers want a new contract that improves compensation and protects benefits. Union priorities include a $10 wage increase over four years, continued benefits, and pension protections for longer-serving employees. Union leaders have argued that Encore Boston Harbor has the financial capacity to meet those demands, pointing to approximately $847M in revenue at the resort last year.
The strike authorization vote does not itself create a strike or set a guaranteed walkout date. However, it permits the union membership and leadership to call one if negotiations fail.
