JBS N.V.(JBS.US)
Tyson Foods(TSN.US)

President Trump is giving beef eaters a reprieve from high prices by lifting the import quotas on imported ground beef for 90 days.
In a social media post, Trump said the U.S. would allow 300K metric tons of ground beef to be brought into the U.S. without paying import tariffs with a “commitment” that it would be sold at 25% below current market prices. The president did not specify where the beef was being imported from, but according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) the majority of beef imported into the U.S. comes from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico.
The tariff holiday will make consumers and foreign beef providers happy but will likely face opposition from domestic ranchers who continue to struggle with a 75-year low in the U.S. cattle herd due to a severe drought in the Great Plains and Western states, increased feed costs, and cattle import restrictions from Mexico due to the New World screwworm.
With the U.S. cattle herd at multi-generational lows, the White House sought to protect domestic ranchers and curb what it called the “foreign-dominated conglomerates that control America’s meat supply” by imposing a 26.4% tariff on over-quota beef imports (imports within the quota face a much lower tariff of $0.044 per kilogram). At the same time, the USDA took steps to rebuild the domestic herd, including expanding grazing on federal lands and limiting the “Product of the USA” label to beef from cattle born, raised, and slaughtered in the U.S.
Since this did little to address the challenges faced by domestic slaughterhouses and meatpacking/processing plants, the Administration lowered the tariff and allowed significantly more beef to come into the U.S. from Argentina under the “Ensuring Affordable Beef for the American Consumer” executive order.
Unfortunately, Trump’s executive order failed to stop the meteoric increase in the price of beef. Prices dipped slightly in the wake of the E.O. before resuming their advance, reaching a record of $6.89 for a pound of ground beef last month.
Trump’s proposal to increase meat imports is weighing on shares of Tyson Foods (TSN) one of the "Big Four" meat producers, while at the same time, shares of Brazil-based JBS N.V. (JBS) are trending higher into the open.
