Seeking Alpha

不做 默克(MRK.US)
不做 赛诺菲(SNY.US)

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump announced an executive order aimed at changing the number and timing of vaccines recommended for children.
We asked Seeking Alpha analysts Stephen Ayers, ALLKA Research, and Gen Alpha how the president's latest executive order could impact vaccine makers.
Stephen Ayers: Trump's executive order is directionally negative for pediatric vaccine-heavy names, but, in my opinion, it's likely to be challenged and go unimplemented.
Merck (MRK) arguably has the most exposure with its MMR/MMRV franchise. Splitting the MMR into monovalent shots would completely disrupt its M-M-R II combination jab. Together, ProQuad, M-M-R II, and Varivax generated $592M for Merck in Q2 2026.
That said, monovalent measles/mumps/rubella vaccines aren't even commercially available in the U.S., and executive orders aren't how vaccine recommendations are legally made. So, if any vaccine names moved on this news, the movement was likely driven by sentiment.
ALLKA Research: On Aug. 10, Trump signed Executive Order 14420, which reduces the number of diseases to 11 for which immunization is recommended for all children.
By the way, this list does not include the vaccines that protect against hepatitis A/B. I also see no scientific justification for administering the MMR, a combination of mumps, measles, and rubella vaccines, as three separate single-disease shots under the administration's so-called Gold Standard Childhood Vaccine Recommendations.
Overall, Merck (MRK) and GSK (GSK) are key players in this market. But in addition to MMR vaccines, their portfolios include MMRV vaccines that also protect against varicella (chickenpox). Merck's MMRV vaccine is called ProQuad, while GSK's is marketed as Priorix Tetra.
Sales of Merck's (MRK) ProQuad/M-M-R II/Varivax were $592M in Q2. Meanwhile, Priorix, Priorix Tetra, and Varilrix generated only $97M in sales for GSK (GSK).
Also, if the policy recommendation by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is changed to comply with Trump's order, this will certainly be met with resistance, if not litigation, from organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, which could drag on for years.
That's why I can't say with certainty how much Trump's decision will hurt Sanofi (SNY), which is the key manufacturer of hepatitis B vaccines. But in any case, polio/pertussis/Hib primary and booster vaccines, including Heplisav-B, generated less than 6% of the company's revenue in Q2.
Gen Alpha: I expect little to no impact. The executive order isn't law. Vaccine makers will likely continue to manufacture vaccines in their current form. Plus, this isn't likely to change public perception on vaccines, as most parents likely already have their own stance on them.
