Volkswagen AG(VWAGY.US)
Volkswagen AG(VOW3.DE)

Volkswagen AG (VWAGY) labor officials reportedly lashed out at management ahead of a week of key meetings, denouncing what they described as “disastrous” communication that’s stoking fears over jobs and plants.
CEO Oliver Blume and VW brand head Thomas Schäfer are due to address staff at the company’s Wolfsburg plant on Tuesday, the first of a series of townhall gatherings where they will seek to explain sweeping cost-cutting plans.
Ahead of the opening meeting, the works council ratcheted up pressure by publishing a survey showing employees ranked the executive board’s communication as their top grievance, ahead of fears over jobs, plant closures, and the future of key German sites, according to a Bloomberg report.
The move follows a posting by Blume on the company’s intranet in which he warned that VW’s situation is “more than critical.” He said its 3.8% operating margin falls far short of what’s needed to fund new technology, products and factories and the group must become simpler and leaner.
“The employees and their families are unsettled and frightened by the executive board’s disastrous communication,” according to the top-ranked question in the survey conducted by VW’s (VWAGY) works council. “When does this kind of communication end? When does joint action begin again to make the company successful?”
Labor leaders, who wield significant power on the supervisory board, are refusing plant closures and deeper job cuts.
Blume must also win over the regional government of Lower Saxony, which controls 20% of voting rights and holds two supervisory-board seats, setting up a fight that moves from the factory floor this week to the boardroom on Sept. 4, the report said.
The stakes were raised further on Friday by Christiane Benner, VW’s supervisory board deputy chair and head of the influential IG Metall union, the report said. Benner described the prospect of an additional 50,000 job cuts as a “hard provocation” and said trust between labor and the executive board had been damaged.
