With an enviable customer demographic, culturally relevant brand, and a supply chain that can act nimbly to changing fashion trends, Reformation (REF) is positioned to become one of the “fastest-growing retailers in the apparel retail sector.”
Wall Street analysts all seem to view the stock as a long-term and compelling opportunity with a long runway for growth with the added benefit of a debt-free balance sheet.
“With a strong, consistent track record for growth, we see this continuing as the brand capitalizes on numerous remaining opportunities, including new stores, category expansion, wholesale, and international,” BTIG’s Janine Stichter writes in her note to clients.
Another endorsement from RBC Capital’s Irene Nattel—who gives the stock an Outperform rating with an $18 price target—characterizes Reformation (REF) as a “compelling emerging-growth, sustainability-anchored specialty retailer underpinned by differentiated brand positioning.”
With analysts seeing double-digit compounded annual growth rates (CAGR) and EBITDA doubling by 2027, Reformation (REF) entered the public markets with a market value close to $1B. Not too shabby for a vintage dress shop that opened in Los Angeles in 2009 and has since expanded into 70 locations with half a billion dollars in annual sales.
Unfortunately, since going public less than a month ago, the stock has failed to break free from its $15 IPO price, which was already at the low end of the forecasted range.
Investors are likely skittish given the intense competitive landscape in the fashion space and are prudently taking a “wait and see” strategy when it comes to Reformation (REF) and its CEO, Hali Borenstein. While Reformation (REF) positions itself as the opposite of "fast fashion" with clothes that are meant to last, it’s a new name in a very tough category.
“Look at Birkenstock. It hasn’t been a bad company, and there’s still always a lot of questions around it,” said co-founder of the Consumer Collective Jessica Ramirez to the Los Angeles Times. “On Running has been having year-over-year growth that is unseen, and they still get tanked when earnings come through.”
Discretionary spending, especially within a young demographic, is also a red flag for potential Reformation (REF) investors.
“Risks associated with growing inflationary overhang have the potential to crowd out discretionary consumption more broadly into 2026 and 2027,” said William Blair analyst Dylan Carden, who gives the stock an Outperform rating with the caveat that as the company expands into new and less mature markets, it faces the risk that future locations may not achieve the same productivity as the existing fleet.
For now, investors may be taking a wait-and-see approach, but Wall Street is already looking beyond the near-term risks, with analysts broadly viewing Reformation as a compelling long-term growth story.
“Reformation’s long runway for growth, combined with its unique retail experience that drives customer loyalty, positions the company to become one of the fastest-growing retailers in the apparel retail sector,” Citi Research's Paul Lejeuz notes.
