Netflix (NFLX) has discussed making rival streaming services available through its platform, a potential shift as major streaming companies increasingly seek to become the main gateway for consumers’ television subscriptions, The New York Times reported on Monday.
The streaming platform has held discussions with NBCUniversal and Fox (FOX) about potentially offering Peacock and Fox One, respectively, according to three people familiar with the talks cited by the newspaper. No deal is imminent, and it remains undecided whether Netflix (NFLX) would incorporate the services’ content directly or sell subscriptions through its platform.
The discussions would mark a change for Netflix (NFLX), which has generally avoided working directly with competing streaming services. In June, however, the company began offering French broadcaster TF1 through its platform, including live channels and on-demand programming.
Amazon (AMZN) has been selling subscriptions to other streaming services through Prime Video for years, while Roku (ROKU) and YouTube from Alphabet (GOOGL) are expanding similar offerings. YouTube recently agreed to add Peacock programming to its $16 per month Premium tier under a five-year deal.
Peacock is owned by Comcast (CMCSA), while Fox One is operated by Fox (FOX).
Antenna said subscriptions purchased through third-party platforms such as Amazon (AMZN), Roku (ROKU), and YouTube have risen about 60% over the past three years, with roughly one-third of new subscriptions now bought through those platforms.
For streaming companies, the approach can increase viewing and reduce some technology and marketing costs, but it can also mean sharing revenue and giving up some control over the customer relationship.
