    Seeking Alpha

RTX’s (RTX) Collins Aerospace completed altitude testing of a next-generation power and thermal management system designed to support more advanced technology aboard the F-35 fighter jet.
The Enhanced Power and Cooling System, known as EPACS, provides greater cooling capacity and emergency power than current systems. Collins developed it to accommodate planned F-35 upgrades that will place additional demands on the aircraft’s electrical and thermal-management infrastructure.
For investors, the test represents a development milestone rather than an immediate source of material revenue. However, successful integration could position RTX to capture production and long-term aftermarket business tied to F-35 modernization, while creating technology that Collins could adapt for other defense and commercial aircraft.
“Successful altitude testing validates system performance in real-world flight conditions,” said Ira Grimmett, vice president of environmental and airframe control systems for power and controls at Collins Aerospace.
The system operated for several days at power levels replicating mission requirements. Collins tested EPACS at different simulated altitudes and pushed it to its operating limits to collect performance data and confirm its ability to supply emergency power.
The tests also were intended to validate Collins’ performance models and reduce technical risks early in the system’s development.
The milestone builds on Collins’ announcement last year that EPACS had met requirements for aircraft integration. The company said the technology would provide the thermal capacity needed to support the F-35’s planned capabilities throughout the aircraft’s operating life.
RTX also sees potential applications for the power and cooling technology aboard future military and commercial aircraft as onboard electronics and mission systems become more energy-intensive.
