If implemented, President Donald Trump's latest move to push the tariff rate on cars and auto parts imported from Canada could affect ~$45B of goods, Fitch Ratings estimated on Monday.
"Assuming the same framework as the current Section 232 tariffs and a similar level of imports, we estimate that the additional tariff burden could reach $4.6B to $5B," Olu Sonola, head of U.S. Economics at Fitch Ratings, said. "Adding a 50% levy on autos would push the effective U.S. tariff rate on Canadian goods from approximately 5.3% to 6.5%, more than double the 3.1% rate that prevailed before the Section 338 tariffs. This would represent a dramatic escalation in the tariff pressure facing Canada."
Trump's announcement that the new tariffs will start on Jan. 1, 2027, provides some time for negotiation, "but the uncertainty alone will strain the highly integrated North American auto supply chain," Sonala said. Retaliatory moves could add to the pain on both sides of the border.
Still, he believes that "Canada would likely bear the brunt of the fallout through weaker production, investment, and employment," he said. "If implemented, the tariffs could force a significant and economically disruptive restructuring of Canada’s auto industry, with lasting consequences for its manufacturing base and broader economy."
Canada supplies ~13% of total U.S. auto and parts imports, second to Mexico, which supplies 37%. The biggest import from Canada is oil and gas, roughly 30% of all imports from the U.S.'s northern neighbor, followed by autos and parts, accounting for 12%, Fitch said.
Before the new tariffs on Canadian goods, the Yale Budget Lab estimates the U.S.'s average statutory tariff rate for goods from all countries stood at 11.0% as of Aug. 11, 2026. Several scheduled tariff increases are expected to increase the tariff rate to 11.8% by the end of the year.
Ford (F) stock fell 3.4% in Monday's regular hours trading, while General Motors (GM) stock slipped 1.1%.
