Exelon's (EXC) ComEd unit said Monday the Illinois Commerce Commission approved its proposed plan to construct a new transmission line in DeKalb County to reinforce grid reliability and resilience.
ComEd said the ICC issued a certificate of public convenience and necessity, which authorizes a public utility to construct certain major infrastructure projects following a public review process that evaluates whether the project is needed, appropriately designed, and in the public interest.
The company said the Kishwaukee Area Reliability Extension project includes a double-circuit 345 kV overhead transmission line extending six miles on existing right-of-way, as well as a new 345 kV and 138 kV substation, and an existing ComEd transmission line will be extended to connect with the new substation in Afton Township.
ComEd said the project will help ensure that the transmission system has the ability to connect future customers, businesses, and other facilities that may be needed as demand for electricity grows.
The KARE project is the first ComEd transmission line requiring ICC siting approval since the Grand Prairie Gateway, which went into service in 2017, the company said.
