Shell (SHEL) has placed on hold its Aphrodite offshore gas project in Trinidad and Tobago after failing to agree on commercial terms with the country’s National Gas Company, Reuters reported late Monday.
Shell had made a positive final investment decision on the project last year, but it has decided for now not to proceed with the development after negotiations failed regarding the sale of the project's expected production of ~100M cf/day of gas, according to the report.
NGC acts as Trinidad’s gas aggregator, buying from producers and supplying downstream users, including the petrochemical sector and Atlantic LNG, where Shell (SHEL) owns a 45% stake.
"Shell is in ongoing negotiations and confirms that the initial rig slot for Aphrodite has been released," the company told Reuters.
The decision represents a setback for Trinidad's efforts to reverse years of declining natural gas output, which has curtailed its LNG exports and petrochemical production.
