Leidos (LDOS) on Tuesday highlighted a Navy contract worth as much as $56.7 million to study psychological health and operational readiness among U.S. military personnel.
The award isn't new. The Department of Defense originally announced it on July 10, 2025, identifying it as a $51.2 million contract with a five-year ordering period. A six-month option would increase its estimated value to $56.7 million, roughly matching the $56 million and 66-month period cited in Tuesday’s Leidos announcement.
Under the contract, Leidos (LDOS) will provide psychological-health and readiness research services for the Naval Health Research Center, or NHRC. The work will include behavioral-health research, operational assessments and data analysis intended to improve the health, performance and readiness of military personnel throughout the deployment cycle.
The research takes on added relevance amid scrutiny of conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, whose unusually long Middle East deployment has generated reports of declining morale, difficult living conditions and mental-health problems among crew members. Navy officials have pushed back on those accounts, saying they hadn't identified an increase in reported suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts aboard the carrier. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao called media coverage of the crew’s struggles “dishonest,” while acknowledging that a small number of mental-health cases had been treated and that sailors were tired after months in a combat zone.
For investors, the key point is that this isn't a newly disclosed award. The Defense Department announced the contract in July 2025, more than a year before Tuesday’s Leidos release. Its potential value therefore may already have been reflected in the company’s reported backlog, although Leidos did not address the contract’s backlog treatment in Tuesday’s announcement.
Still, the award provides Leidos (LDOS) with a multiyear position in military-health research and reinforces its relationship with the Navy. It also may generate a relatively steady stream of task-order revenue through 2030, with a possible extension into January 2031.
Leidos (LDOS) will study risks, protective factors and interventions affecting service members before, during and after deployments. The company also will develop evidence-based strategies designed to improve resilience, support military decision-making and reduce adverse health outcomes.
“This program reinforces the need for mission-critical health research in the military community,” Sarah McNichol, vice president of behavioral health and readiness at Leidos Health, said in the announcement. “It is vitally important we work to improve warfighter readiness by studying the various psychological factors that can impact military populations.”
The work will be performed in San Diego, according to the original Defense Department announcement. The Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center Norfolk’s contracting department in Philadelphia awarded the contract after receiving three offers.
NHRC is one of eight laboratories within the Navy Medical Research & Development Enterprise. Its research areas include behavioral health, epidemiology, operational readiness and disease surveillance.
