Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled a new set of tariffs to counter Washington's duties as the trade war between the two neighboring countries seemed to escalate.
U.S. President Donald Trump had imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian products on Saturday under a previously unused provision of the 1930 Tariff Act. The retaliatory levies announced by Canada will affect about $20B of annual U.S. imports, roughly matching the value of the tariffs imposed by Trump.
Trump on Monday said he'll impose a 50% tariff on Canadian cars, trucks, and steel, starting on Jan. 1, 2027, firing another salvo in the U.S. escalating trade dispute with its northern neighbor.
"Canada will be treated like a State no longer!" he posted on Truth Social.
The latest threat comes as trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada broke down, putting into effect 50% tariffs on about $20B of Canadian goods, including dairy, cement, textiles, hockey sticks, and other goods.
Carney said U.S. demands during negotiations showed that it wanted to destroy Canada's major industries, including auto, steel, and aluminum. "That was one of the main reasons we said no. It was a bad deal," he told reporters on Monday.
Canada also announced support programs for Canadian businesses that will be hurt by the tariffs, Bloomberg reported.
The country is set to double its counter tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum products to 50%, while American-made furniture, clothing, and apparel will also see a new 50% duty imposed. Video game consoles, smartphones, and other electronics met the same fate, the report added.
On Saturday, Carney had said that Canada will impose "dollar for dollar" reciprocal tariffs on American goods, noting that “last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair and uneconomic and called into question the reliability of any deal.”
The new levies will start from September 8.
Other U.S. goods, including appliances, cheese, fish and seafood, as well as certain steel and aluminum derivative products, will face new 25% tariffs, according to the BBG report. The report added that a range of U.S.-made machinery, industrial tools, and farm equipment will see 15% tariffs.
The Canadian government also announced a C$7.5B fund to help Canadian businesses, which will also include a boost in funding for some existing programs, the report said.
