SpaceX (SPCX) plans to develop a $100 billion Starship launch and production complex on about 125,000 acres near Pecan Island, Louisiana, company executives and Gov. Jeff Landry announced Tuesday.
Dubbed Starbase, Louisiana, the facility is expected to include five launch complexes with two pads each, along with propellant production, power generation, vehicle processing and employee housing. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first launch targeted for 2029.
The project would give SpaceX (SPCX) another base for Starship operations alongside its existing South Texas site and a planned facility at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The Louisiana location would support southbound launches over the Gulf of Mexico and missions into near-polar orbits.
That capability could be important to SpaceX’s proposal for a vast constellation of data-center satellites. Starship is also expected to carry larger Starlink satellites, launch orbital computing infrastructure and transport NASA astronauts to the moon.
SpaceX’s (SPCX) proposed Louisiana launch hub would give the company a third Starship base and support its plans for higher launch volumes, next-generation Starlink satellites and orbital data centers. The $100 billion project also underscores the enormous capital spending and execution required to turn Starship into a dependable commercial platform.
The company has said the Louisiana complex could eventually accommodate thousands of flights a year, though Starship remains early in its development. The vehicle has launched only twice this year, leaving a sizable gap between current performance and Elon Musk’s goal of multiple daily flights.
The project could create 3,000 to 10,000 jobs, according to SpaceX (SPCX) President Gwynne Shotwell. The company and Louisiana also plan to restore coastal wetlands and protect wildlife around the site, which previously belonged to ExxonMobil before being returned to the state through a legal settlement.
