Gold is poised to reach $5,000/oz by year-end, Natixis analyst Bernard Dahdahup said Tuesday, raising his target from $4,600, as the metal has held critical support above $4,000 and looks to end the month nearly 15% higher.
Gold's rally started in early August as disappointing economic data began to force markets to reprice interest rate expectations and then caught a second bid after the U.S. Treasury said it would double buybacks of 10- and 30-year bonds to $4B at the same time U.S. debt topped $40T, Dahdahup notd.
"Despite a higher opportunity cost of holding gold, the market is concerned about fiscal and bond market stability," the analyst wrote. "The ensuing currency debasement worry has made gold attractive."
Dahdah said he expects growing sovereign debt fears, which have been driving gold prices this month, to provide further tailwinds through the rest of the year.
The analyst sees gold prices averaging $5K/oz through 2027 with silver at ~$78/oz next year.
Gold futures finished flat Tuesday after scaling a more than three-month high earlier in the session, as the rally lost momentum near a key psychological resistance level.
The day's flat finish is "just a drop in momentum," TD Securities global head of commodity strategy Bart Melek said in a note. "If anything, you can probably attribute this to gold moving to a strong resistance level at $4,700 or so."
Markets are now focused on Wednesday's U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation report and Fed Chair Warsh's remarks at the Jackson Hole symposium on Friday for further clues on the central bank's monetary policy outlook.
Front-month Comex gold (XAUUSD:CUR) for August delivery edged down less than 0.1% to $4,638.10/oz, snapping a four-session winning streak, and front-month Comex August silver (XAGUSD:CUR) added 0.1% to $68.636/oz.
