U.S. crude oil futures extended earlier losses post-market Tuesday as Iran and Oman announced a proposal that would establish a temporary shipping lane through the Strait of Hormuz.
The proposed framework includes the establishment of a joint temporary shipping lane through the Strait of Hormuz and an agreement to implement a joint project to clear the strait of mines, the Omani News Agency reported.
Technical talks between the two sides will continue with the aim of agreeing on a permanent maritime corridor and the future administration of the strait, the report said.
Meanwhile, Pakistan's army chief concluded a visit to Iran, which the Iranian media said the trip yielded positive results, and the U.S. reportedly is preparing to return diplomats to their posts in the Middle East.
The actions followed Monday's announcement by the U.S. of expanded sanctions intended to cut off Iran's economic lifeline while threatening to punish countries that continue to do business with Iran.
"It seems crude is now beginning to price in a sooner rather than later peace deal," BOK Financial Securities senior VP of trading Dennis Kissler said in a note. "With some oil still getting through the strait, Iran and the U.S. are more likely to be in a newer state of de-escalation as both sides are looking for an off-ramp."
"The near term looks like the U.S. Treasury has bought some time for the oil market in terms of generating enough fear to end the buying for now from speculators," Scott Shelton of TP ICAP wrote.
Still, the sharp decline in oil prices may be an overreaction by market participants, according to analysts at Ritterbusch and Associates, who cautioned that oil could suddenly swing higher if Iran unleashes military strikes on U.S. installations in the region.
U.S. crude fell below $81/bbl after-hours Tuesday, after front-month Nymex crude (CL1:COM) for September delivery slumped 3.1% in regular trading to $82.36/bbl, and front-month Brent crude for (CO1:COM) October delivery dropped 3.9% to $88.58/bbl, while front-month Nymex natural gas (NG1:COM) for September delivery slipped 0.4% to $2.770/MMBtu.
